Study At Home Top Tips

Studying at home provides its own rewards and challenges; the comfort of working in a familiar relaxed environment can be both freeing and distracting - establishing proper routines are key to maintaining motivation and progress. Follow our top 3 tips below to ensure that students keep their studies up while they are at home.

  1. Divide work time and play time very clearly to clarify their purpose.

    • This could be as simple as saying “work in the morning, play in the afternoon” or setting a particular time of the day - e.g. “From 16.00 - 17.00 we read our books.”

    • Having these activities be very separate ensures that students will enjoy both and commit to both wholeheartedly instead of wavering between the two ineffectually.

  2. Have tangible rewards/punishments present to keep students on track.

    • This can be as simple as an adult being in the room with them - a “watchful eye” to keep them on track. Or it could be a fun afternoon activity to keep students motivated.

    • Internal motivation is always more effective than external motivation. Genuine and precise praise for a student’s good effort always motivates them to try their best.

  3. Give students the tools they need to do their work.

    • This can be as simple as adequate equipment, the proper books or a quiet space to work. In other cases, it might mean some help from an older sibling or a parent to look over their work or give some advice.

    • Once a student feels that they can achieve a task confidently then there is no stopping them! Getting them to the point where they can have a go and see the good results is half the battle. To keep them motivated, take a few minutes to celebrate the success they have made so far.
